Non-genuine “knock-off” batteries lack the sophisticated
circuitry required to communicate with Makita tools and
chargers, increasing the risk of failure, reduced
performance, and potential damage.

Fire and Explosion Risk

Poorly designed circuitry can lead to
thermal runaway and bursting.

Tool Damage

Risk of permanent electrical damage to
your Makita tools and chargers.

Warranty Void

Using non-genuine batteries immediately
voids your Makita tool warranty.

Performance Gaps

Unknown runtime and power delivery
compared to genuine cells.

The Standard

Makita batteries meet IEC 62133 (the
international gold standard for Li-ion safety).
TO TOP
Check the differences in style of the white battery lock.
Check the differences in colour and style of yellow terminal.
The Star protection symbol is sharp and pointier on genuine Makita batteries – not rounded.
Check the differences in the ventilation ports.
The battery rail shape and height are different.
Genuine Makita batteries have 4 vertical red LEDs, that when pressed remain on for approximately three seconds and then turns off simultaneously.
When the white battery lock is pressed down, a genuine Makita battery will have a red sticker on top. This is missing from most imitation batteries.
Genuine Makita decals are printed onto the housing. They are not glued or stuck on. Take note of the bold, sharp and even lines of the font and decals.
Imitation BMS (Battery Management System) lack the safety and functionality standards of a genuine Makita BMS.
The serial number is always printed on genuine Makita batteries, usually missing from imitations.
  1. Genuine Makita batteries have one white screw cap with a >PC< marking – usually missing on imitation batteries.
  2. Take note of font, positioning and size of characters.
  3. Check the difference in icons and symbols.
  4. Check for spelling mistakes.
  5. Take note of any differences in the Star protection symbol.

Makita technology goes beyond power, delivering smart communication across the tool, battery and charger systems.

Star Protection Computer Controls™

OVERLOAD PROTECTION: Automatically stops the tool if it detects a current draw that threatens the motor.

OVER-DISCHARGE PROTECTION: Prevents the battery from dropping below a critical voltage level (preventing “bricked” batteries).

OVERHEAT PROTECTION: Monitors temperature and cuts power before damage occurs.

Active 3 Controls (Charger)

ACTIVE COOLING: A built-in fan pushes air through the battery during charging to reduce heat and speed up the cycle.

CONDITIONING CHARGE: The charger analyses the battery’s history and adjusts voltage/current to optimise health.

TO TOP

80% of premature battery failures are caused by poor habits. Follow these “Golden Rules” to maintain optimal battery performance.

Follow Guidelines

Always adhere to the user manual’s recommendations for charging, usage, and maintenance.

Temperature Control

Heat is the #1 enemy. If a tool feels hot, stop and let the battery cool for 15 minutes. Never leave batteries in a hot car.

Clean Contacts

Periodically blow out dust from terminals with compressed air to ensure a perfect connection.

Limit Excessive Overload

Avoid excessive overload over prolonged periods. This can generate excessive heat, causing faster battery degradation.

The 20-80 Rule

Don’t run your battery to 0%. Recharge when you feel a drop in power (around 20%). Avoid keeping them at 100% for long-term storage. Avoid charging batteries unattended; do not leave them charging overnight or while you
are away.

Storage “Sweet Spot”

For off-season storage, maintain batteries at a 40–50% charge (2 bars on the indicator). Store them in a clean, cool, and dry location. Disconnect batteries from tools during transport, and keep clear of sharp accessories to reduce the risk of punctures or damage.

Get more life from every charge by following these tips and being mindful of
how you use, charge, and store your power tool batteries. You can extend
their lifespan and keep your tools running efficiently for years to come.
